nerally fly near the Surface of the water, 
and as 80on as they see a fieh they can 
manage, they dart at it and Swallow it 
whole. The other bird is a Wood- 
pecker. It feeds on insects that live 
under the bark of trees : it also builds 
is nest in the trunk of a tree, and forms 
the hole in the hard wood with no other 
instrument than its beak. 
Witham. That is, indeed, wonderful. 
But what have we here ? Look, dear 
Mary, at this little, tiny bird! 
Mary. Why that :s a little curiosity: 
it does not look bigger than a humble 
bee. Are there really, mamma, any 
birds as Small as that ? 
Mamma. Yes, my dear; that is 
called a Humming-bird: its plumage 1s 
beautiful, and it is the Smallest of all 
birds. 
Mary. I am afraid England is too
